Vandiver's grand slam lifts Panthers past Cats |
|
Josh Vandiver's grand slam in the 10th inning lifted homestanding Georgia State to a 9-5 non-conference baseball victory over Western Carolina on March 20.
With one out and the bases loaded, Vandiver nailed the first pitch he saw from Joe Camac over the left field wall to give Georgia State the win. After a rain delay of almost 30 minutes before the start and a 40-minute delay during the contest, WCU forced extra innings by scoring a run in the ninth on Todd Buchanan's RBI single for a 5-5 tie. The Panthers went up 2-0 in the bottom of the first on Kyle Breitbach's home run with a man on base. They made it 4-0 on sacrifice flies by Clint Mize in the second and Dustin Phillips in the fourth. The Cats got on the board in the fifth on a double by Doug Myers and Clint Ramsey's RBI single. Donovan Minero's two-run homer cut the gap to 4-3 in the sixth. Ronnie Robinson was the winning pitcher while Ryan Foster (0-1) took the loss. Mize and Breitbach led the Panthers with three hits apiece. Stephen Burroughs, Garrett Greer and Sean Fitzgerald all had two hits. Buchanan, Minero, Myers and Ramsey each had two hits to lead Western. |
