Grant Rembert and Curtis Moncus hit back-to-back home runs in the first game of a Sunday doubleheader to lead UNC-Asheville to a 3-2 victory over Western Carolina at McCormick Field.
In the nightcap, three Catamount pitchers limited the Bulldogs to three hits and earned a split with a 1-0 victory. Both games were seven-inning contests. The opener was scoreless until the Bulldogs scored three runs in the fourth. Rembert hit a two-run homer, and Moncus followed with a solo shot. WCU (32-21) plated a run in the fifth as Donovan Minero doubled, Clint Ramsey singled and Jimmy Cochran had an RBI on an infield out. Rob Goldston doubled and scored on an error cutting the gap to 3-2 in the sixth. Brad Beck pitched the first five innings for the win. He scattered six hits, walked no one and struck out three. WCU reliever Brad Josey (4-2) took the loss. Goldston and Brian Sigmon both had two hits for the Cats. In the second game, Seth Foster, Brandon McDowell and Ryan Basner kept the Bulldogs at bay. Foster (7-3) pitched the first three innings for the win. McDowell retired all nine batters he faced, and Basner struck out two in the final inning for his third save. The only run of the game came in the fourth. Alex Gary singled, and after a fielder's choice, Dan Woodley had an RBI double. Jason Walker was the losing pitcher. Goldston was two of four at the plate, and Woodley went two of three. UNC-A's Bill Carley was two of three. |
