|
Khalil Greene and Michael Johnson each hit two-run homers in the ninth inning as top-ranked Clemson pulled away for a 12-4 victory over Western Carolina on May 15 at Childress Field/Hennon Stadium.
For Greene, it was his second two-run blast of the day. He gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead with his homer in the first. They looked to be in cruise control with two more runs in the second. L.J. DeMaino had an RBI triple, followed by Kyle Frank's RBI double. Clemson was held hitless from that point by WCU starter Jared Burton (7-5) until a solo homer by Jeff Baker with two out in the eighth breaking a 4-4 tie. While Burton was shutting down Clemson, the Catamount offense began to heat up, scoring four runs over the next three innings to tie the game. Alan Beck put WCU on the board with an RBI double in the second. The Cats made it 4-2 in the third. Chris Davis walked, moved to third on a Ryan Schade double and scored on a ground out by Todd Buchanan. Western tied the game with two runs in the fourth. Alex Gary singled, and Clint Ramsey walked. They moved up on a wild pitch, and Todd Roper had an RBI ground out. Davis singled in the tying run. Clemson reliever Jeff Hahn would recorded the final out of the fourth and picked up the win by holding WCU scoreless over the next 3.1 innings. Clemson broke the game open with the seven-run ninth. In addition to the homers, runs scored on singles by DeMaino and Baker along with an error. Frank led the way for the Tigers by going three of five. DeMaino, Greene and Baker all had two hits. Gary paced WCU with a three of four day, and Schade was two of four. Winthrop pulled out a 3-2 victory over the Cats on May 14 at Winthrop. The Eagles scored a run in the first on doubles by Todd Leathers and Bennett Stapf. WCU tied it in the third as Dan Woodley doubled and scored on Todd Roper's single. Winthrop went up 2-1 in the fourth on John Neale's RBI single. That's how it stayed until the eighth when Gary singled, advanced on a wild pitch and a fly out and scored on Beck's ground out. Two errros set the stage for Mark Schmidt to drive in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth with a sacrifice fly. Eagle starter Jason Terry scattered 10 hits in eight innings for the win. Ryan Chenard recorded the final out to pick up the save. WCU reliever Alex Obert took the loss. Buchanan, Ramsey and Woodley all had two hits. |
