Catamounts win two games from 26th-ranked Cowboys

Western Carolina scored 13 runs in the final five frames to defeat 26th-ranked Oklahoma State 15-9 in baseball action April 30.

The Catamounts won both games from the Cowboys in the series at OSU.

Western took the lead for good at 10-5 with five unearned runs in the sixth. The key hit was Todd Roper's two-run single.

Alex Gary's home run with a man on base upped the margin to 12-5 in the seventh. Rod Goldston's two-run double and an error made it 15-5 in the eighth.

John Urick's three-run homer cut the gap to 15-8 in the bottom of the eighth. Von Tungein homered for the final Cowboy run in the ninth.

The Cats took a 1-0 lead in the first on Todd Buchanan's RBI double.

A home run by Jason Jaramillo tied it in the second.

Brian Sigmon's solo shot put WCU back on top 2-1 in the third.

Western extended the margin to 5-1 in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Roper and Alan Beck's two-run single.

OSU pulled into a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the fifth as Josh Fields homered with two men on base and Urick followed with a solo blast.

Beck had three hits in six at-bats. Sigmon, Brandon McDowell and Wayne Kilmer all had two hits.

Fields and Urick each went three of five for the Cowboys. Jaramillo and Jose Virgil both had three hits.

Joe Camac (2-2) picked up the win in relief. Former Smoky Mountain standout Derrick Hawk was credited with his second save.

OSU reliever Aaron Whitehead took the loss.

Beck hit two home runs, and the Cats scored nine runs in the seventh to claim a 12-5 victory in the first game of the series on April 29.

They sent 14 men to the plate in the seventh thanks to six walks and five hits to take an 11-3 lead. Six of the runs scored with two outs to break the game open. Chris Davis had an RBI double. Kilmer drove in a run with a ground ball, and Buchanan walked with the bases loaded. Todd Roper stole home before Denver Edick delivered a two-run single. Gary added an RBI double, and Davis singled in two more runs.

Beck homered for WCU's last run in the eighth.

OSU scored twice in the ninth as Urick walked with the bases loaded and Ryan Olivo had a sacrifice fly.

Beck's two-run shot put his team ahead in the first.

Jaramillo's sacrifice fly made it 2-1 in the third.

Back-to-back homers by Scott Kirby and Brian Kraft put the Cowboys in front 3-2 in the fourth.

Ryan Basner (5-2) pitched three hitless innings for the win.

OSU reliever Cody King suffered the loss.

Roper, Beck, Edick and Davis all had two hits for the Cats.

Virgil paced OSU with a pair of hits.
