13 from Smoky Mountain make All-WAC teams for spring sports

Thirteen student-athletes from Smoky Mountain have been named to All-Western Athletic Conference teams for spring sports.

Leading the way were the baseball and soccer teams with four selections apiece. Named from the baseball team are seniors Jake Lunnen, Trent Dillard and Justin Ray and junior Dustin Melton.

Lunnen led the Mustangs in batting average (.480) and home runs (five). Dillard was right behind with a batting average of .476 and four homers. Ray hit .319 with a team-leading 16 walks. Melton posted a .333 average and led the team with 10 stolen bases.

Senior Lindsey Lewis became a four-year All-WAC performer for the soccer team. She holds school career records as a goalie for wins (45), saves (359) and shutouts (24).

Also making all-conference for the Lady Mustangs were seniors Katie O'Neill and Jenna Bates and sophomore Sarah Whatley.

O'Neill and Bates were part of SM's strong defense and shared the Mustang Award. Whatley led the team in goals (22) and points (47).

Senior Amanda Magruder was the lone Lady Mustang softball player to be all-conference. She batted .295 with a .427 on-base percentage.

Individual sports determined their all-conference performers in league meets.

Sophomore Eric McManus was selected conference runner of the year in track. He was the league champion in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter run.

Senior Darius Bryson won the 100-meter dash to claim all-conference honors.

Junior Zeke Cooper placed second in the WAC golf tournament with a 153 to become all-conference. Senior Dan White was also all-conference after placing fourth with a 155.

Those receiving honorable mention from SM included seniors Justin Hawk and Matt Hopkins in baseball and senior Tara Green and junior Amber Stephens in softball.

Franklin's Brandon McDowell was named conference baseball player of the year. Other all-conference selections included:

Jared Greenwood, Gary Morris, Ray Gill and Craig Younce of Franklin; Eryk McConnell, Michael Munoz, Caleb McConnell, Mark Golden and Mark Conard of Tuscola; Seth Hall and Dane Owen of Brevard; Jeff Moore and Brandon Henry of Erwin; Justin Wilkins and Steven Smith of Enka; and Wesley Wells of Pisgah.

Enka's Corine Black was chosen soccer player of the year. Other all-conference selections included:

Rebecca Smith, Megan Simmons, Kelly Nassis, Jenna Brooks, Carolyn Pratt and Meghann Bryant of Tuscola; Katie Bosch, Kellyn Gaddy, Tiffany Caldwell and Claire Sproul of Enka; Valerie Cheek, Paige Rankin, Felicia Justice and Jennifer Smathers of Franklin; Shannon Silver and Lucy Stowe of Brevard; Katlyn Jacobsen of Erwin; and Leslie Young of Pisgah.

Enka's Megan Luther was chosen softball player of the year. Other all-conference selections included:

Dana Hill, Ali Mertens, Kristin Farmer, Kristi Lipe, Rebecca Clontz and Ashley Moore of Enka; Charlotte Cocke, Heidi Morgan, Leah McElrath and Lindsey Matthews of Pisgah; Laura Kemp, Stacey Swain, Catie Edwards, Laura Franklin and Megan Brown of Erwin; Stephanie Robbins and Amanda Williams of Franklin; Ashley Rice of Brevard; and Amy Brown of Tuscola.
