Smoky Mountain Athletic Director Si Simmons has been named Region 8 Athletic Director of the Year by the N.C. Athletic Directors Association.
The award was presented last week at the group's annual conference in Asheville. "Anytime you get an award from any professional organization, it means a lot," he said. "If you're recognized by your peers, that means a lot. More than anything, it makes me feel good about some of the things we are doing with our program. It's more a program award. It's not so much an athletic director award." He said the award is a reflection on the coaching staff as well as the number of scholar-athletes the school is producing. Simmons also pointed to the camaraderie between the athletic and academic areas. He noted the strong community support that is evidenced by the booster club's banner program and the publication of its fall sports program. Simmons said the athletic support from the students and administration are strong. He added that facilities have recently been upgraded. |
