Woodard, McFalls come in second at West Henderson

Smoky Mountain wrestlers Brandon Woodard and Chris McFalls finished second in the Top Gun Invitational held Saturday at East Henderson.

Woodard was seeded third in the 135-pound class. He pinned W. Linton of Eastside (S.C.) and won by default over Polk's R. Wilson. He fell to Tucker Ensley of Erwin 10-6 in the finals. Ensley is a two-time state qualifier.

"Brandon wrestled really well," Coach Ian Roper said. "I was really proud of the effort he gave. It's all starting to click for him."

McFalls was the second seed at 171 pounds. He pinned A. Justice of Crest and A. Miller of Byrnes (S.C.). In the finals, he lost 5-3 to Erwin's Andy Ingle.

"Chris gave up a five-point throw early in the match," Roper said." He outwrestled him the rest of the match. He's wrestling super."

Recording one win each for the Mustangs were Mike Scott (112), Jake Scott (119), Rory Welch (130), Trevor Brown (152), Adam Johnson (189) and Matt Boud (heavyweight).

Roper said the Mustangs did not do well as a team. They finished behind Asheville and Franklin, squads they have beaten earlier this year. Due to the SAT being given Saturday, SM had only six regulars on hand.

"We're probably a better dual team than an individual team," Roper said.

In JV action, Trevor Trout was second (112), Mark Leamon (160) and Adam Robinson (189) were third, and John Clark (135) was fourth.
