Smoky Mountain spikers take victory over Brevard |

Smoky Mountain moved within a game of a perfect Western Athletic Conference volleyball season with a 15-10, 15-5, 15-5 victory last Thursday at Brevard.
The Lady Mustangs (18-4, 11-0) got off to a slow start but outscored Brevard 44-13 from the middle of the first game on. "We played an inspired Brevard team that didn't make a lot of mistakes in the early going," Coach Cindi Simmons said. "They passed well and had some good change-up hits. I was proud of how we played through their emotion of Senior Night." The Lady Devils led 7-1 in the first game before SM rallied. Melissa Collins started the comeback with three points, and Kaitlin Ritchie had a kill cutting the gap to 7-4. Ritchie's three points, including an ace, tied it 7-7. Collins served three points, and Ritchie recorded a kill giving the Lady Mustangs a 12-10 edge. Cassie Proffitt served the final three points of the game with Ritchie providing a pair of kills. The serving of Tara Green and net play of Lindsey Lewis put SM up 6-1 in game three. Green ran off five points while Lewis had two kills and a block. Lewis served three points, and Ritchie put down a kill for a 9-4 advantage. Ritchie's three points and a kill and block by Lewis made it 14-5. The game ended on Lewis' kill with Green serving. Collins served four points while Ritchie and Katie Loughlin had kills giving the Lady Mustangs a 4-1 lead in the third game. Four points, including two aces, by Lewis and back-to-back kills by Loughlin extended the margin to 12-4. Collins served the last three points with Loughlin providing a kill. Ritchie led in kills with 14. Loughlin added 10, and Lewis had eight. Collins recorded 21 assists. Collins was tops in service points with 15. Not missing a serve were Collins (21), Ritchie (13), Lewis (12) and Proffitt (10). Green served 91.7 percent. Team serving was 95.9 percent. The Lady Mustang JVs pulled out a 15-13, 14-16, 15-13 win improving their record to 11-9 and avenging an earlier loss. "We played well for it to be such a long road trip," Coach Nikki Young said. "We passed well, and served well." She singled out Jesse Woodard for her hitting. |
