Lady Mustangs start slow before defeating Brevard |

Smoky Mountain overcame a slow start to defeat Brevard 15-8, 15-13, 15-6 in Western Athletic Conference volleyball action Sept. 19 at the SM gym.
"Brevard has played some of the better teams in the conference close and owns a win over Tuscola," Coach Cindi Simmons said. "We met the challenge and were in control most of the way." The Lady Mustangs came from behind three times in game one. Kaitlin Ritchie's three points and a Lindsey Lewis kill tied it 3-3. Three points from Melissa Collins along with kills from Kaitlin Ritchie and Katie Loughlin knotted it 6-6. They went ahead for good at 11-8 on five points, including an ace, by Abbey Higgins and a Lewis kill. Collins served the final point. Cassie Proffitt's four points, including an ace, and Ritchie's kill put SM up 5-1 in the second game. The margin grew to 11-3 on four points, including an ace, by Tara Green. The Lady Blue Devils slowly fought back coming as close as 14-13. The game ended on Ritchie's kill with Proffitt serving. Proffitt served four points, and Ritchie and Green both had a pair of kills helping build a 6-1 advantage in the third game. The Lady Mustangs led 10-2 in game three on four points, including an ace, by Ritchie and a Lewis kill. Lewis served the final two points with the match wrapping up on her ace and Christy Pruett's kill. Ritchie finished with 13 kills, and Lewis had eight. Collins served 22 assists. Collins and Higgins both had nine service points. Proffitt served 92.9 percent, and Ritchie finished at 91.7 percent. Team serving was 86.7 percent. Brevard won the JV match 6-15, 15-3, 15-10. "We had a big comeback in the first game and got satisfied," Coach Nikki Young said. |
