Lady Mustangs blast Erwin in WAC action |

Smoky Mountain blasted Erwin 15-3, 15-2, 15-3 in Western Athletic Conference volleyball action Sept. 5 at the SM gym.
"We were focused from the outset," Coach Cindi Simmons said. "Even when we had a big lead, we didn't let up. We got everybody in the game, and the bench played well." The Lady Mustangs were in control from the start as Melissa Collins served the first six points, including an ace, in the first game and Kaitlin Ritchie had a kill. The Lady Warriors never threatened, and Lindsey Lewis served the last two points. Ritchie served the first four points, including two aces, in game two. Tara Green ran off eight points, including an ace, and Lewis had a kill upping the margin to 11-0. Lewis served the final four points with Ritchie providing a pair of kills. Cassie Proffitt's five points and Ritchie's kill gave the Lady Mustangs a 5-1 edge in game three. Amanda Magruder served four points with Ritchie having a kill for an 11-1 advantage. Shay Shular served the three clinching points, including consecutive aces. Ritchie was tops in kills with 10. Collins and Abbey Higgins both had eight assists.

Collins, Proffitt and Green all had eight service points. Not missing a serve along with the number of attempts were Collins (12), Proffitt (11), Ritchie (nine), Lewis (six), Shular (three), Dorothy Keane (two), Amber Stephens (one) and Tabitha Ashe (one). Green served 90.9 percent. Team serving was 93.9 percent.
The Lady Mustang JVs won 16-14, 10-15, 15-9. Ryan Cook served eight points in the first game, and Natalie Cantler had seven in the third game. "Brittany Hilton played well on the front row, and Kayla Revis came off the bench and passed well," Coach Nikki Young said. "We served very poorly." She added that Elizabeth Trine joined Hilton in blocking well. |
