Smoky Mountain breezes to win over Blue Ridge

Smoky Mountain's Lindsey Lewis goes for a kill over two Blue Ridge players in the Lady Mustangs' win last week.

Smoky Mountain had no trouble defeating Blue Ridge 15-1, 15-5, 15-6 in volleyball action Aug. 29 at the SM gym.

"We came out and played hard and never let them get any momentum going," Coach Cindi Simmons said.

Cassie Proffitt set the tone for the match when her four points, including two aces, and kills by Kaitlin Ritchie and Tara Green put the Lady Mustangs up 5-1 in the first game. Ritchie ran off six points, including two aces, while Green, Lindsey Lewis and Abbey Higgins had kills upping the margin to 11-1. Green served the last four points with three straight aces before the game ended on Christy Pruett's kill.

Melissa Collins served the first four points of game two. Three were aces, and Ritchie had a kill. Four points from Higgins along with kills by Lewis and Green built the margin to 10-3. Amber Stephens served the clinching point.

The Lady Mustangs trailed 5-2 in the third game but took the lead for good at 6-5 on kills by Lewis and Katie Loughlin with Green serving. Loughlin served four points, including two aces, and Dorothy Keane had a kill for an 11-6 margin. Keane served the last four points with Tabitha Ashe recording three kills.

Simmons said Collins, who had 19 assists, did a good job getting the ball to the hitters. She said hitters had a balanced attack as Ritchie had seven kills followed by Lewis with six and Green with five.

The coach praised the hitting of Ashe and serving of Keane.

Ritchie and Green led in service points with eight. Not missing a serve were Proffitt (nine), Higgins (six), Loughlin (five) and Stephens (four). Collins finished at 91.7 percent, and Ritchie was at 90.9 percent. Team serving was 90.6 percent.

The Lady Mustang JVs cruised to a 15-3, 15-5 victory. Ryan Cook served 14 points in the second game.

"We tried some new things with different people in different positions," Coach Nikki Young said.

"Everybody got to play."
