Fuller, Vives help SM take victory at Swain

Josh Fuller and Jose Vives both scored two goals, and Fuller added an assist as Smoky Mountain took a 6-1 non-conference soccer victory Monday at Swain.

"Having a game like that before we went into another tough stretch was a good thing," Coach Dolphus Brown said.

He said Swain is much improved and has the best team in the program's history.

The Mustangs (15-3-2) got off 25 shots while holding Swain to five. SM's Will Peoples made two saves, and Tyler Howie had 11 for the Maroon Devils.

"We could have scored a lot more goals if we had done a little better on our finishing," Brown said.

Vives put the Mustangs on the board at the 18:30 mark. Fuller, who had just entered the game, made a cross with Vives scoring from 13 yards out.

"Jose was well positioned and one-touched it right in," Brown said.

Swain tied it just 50 seconds later on a goal by Daniel Zimmerman.

"We did not defend very well," the coach said. "There was nothing Will could do."

SM took the lead for good at the 29-minute mark when Fuller scored off an assist from Israel Vargas. The goal came from seven yards out.

"Josh was there by himself and kicked it in," Brown said.

The lead reached 3-1 at the 32:30 mark with Fuller scoring off Stephen Brown's pass form the far post.

"Josh came flying in and headed it right past the keeper," the coach said.

The Mustangs made it 4-1 at the 58:10 mark when Vargas scored from six yards out off a cross from Dan White to the far post.

"Israel was standing there waiting on it," Brown said.

Jimmy Welch lofted a shot from 40 yards out that floated over the head of the keeper extending the lead to 5-1 at the 61-minute mark.

Vives closed the scoring 10 minutes later. The ball was knocked around in front of the goal before he put it in from six yards out.
