Fuller leads Mustangs to victory over Hawks

Josh Fuller scored four goals leading Smoky Mountain to a 6-2 non-conference soccer victory over North Buncombe last Thursday at Carr Hooper Stadium/Babe Howell Field.

"It was a good win," Coach Dolphus Brown said. "We really passed the ball well. Our defense broke down a time or two."

The Mustangs (10-2-1) broke on top 10 minutes into the game when Dan White scored with assists by Israel Vargas and Nicholas McDonald. Vargas took McDonald's pass from the midfield then flicked the ball to White, who scored from 12 yards out.

Fuller's first goal came at the 16:53 mark. He started on the right side, broke back to the middle then shot it past the keeper.

The halftime lead was 3-0 after Munene Mwaniki scored at 34:30. A fullback met Mwaniki at the corner of the box, but he dribbled past the defender and put the ball in the net.

Just 20 seconds into the second half, Jimmy Welch made a pass in the box to Fuller, who shot from deep in the corner for a 4-0 lead.

Fuller made it 5-0 at the 54-minute mark. A fullback had the ball just outside the box, but his pass went off of Fuller, who managed to get enough of his foot on the ball to push it past the keeper.

"That was one of those blood and guts goals," Brown said.

A breakaway goal by Steven Pires put the Black Hawks on the board at the 61:30 mark.

Fuller got that goal back at the 68-minute mark when he dribbled past three defenders to score for the fourth time.

The final goal of the game was by North's Tommy Evans at 69:12.

The Mustangs dominated play by getting off 26 shots to nine for the Hawks. SM's Will Peoples made four saves. North's Casey Irvine had 12.

"Jimmy Welch is getting the ball where we want it out of the midfield," Brown said.

Monday's game at Tuscola was postponed until Tuesday due to rain. Results were not known at the Herald sports dedline
