Pisgah wrestlers defeat SM with pin in last weight class

The outcome wasn't decided until the final match as Pisgah edged Smoky Mountain 36-34 in the season's first wrestling match on Nov. 19 at the SM gym.

"It was a great effort by every individual that wrestled," Coach Tom Sargent said. "That's what I was looking for. I was well pleased with our aggressiveness and willingness to attempt moves."

Nick Woodard, Jake Scott and Brandon Woodard recorded pins for the Mustangs.

SM won eight of the 12 contested matches. However, the Bears took their four by pins, and the Mustangs were hampered by having to forfeit two weight classes.

Action started at 119 pounds, and SM was ahead until forfeiting the heavyweight division leaving two weight classes. The Mustangs regained the lead at 103, but lost the final match at 112.

Results by weight class included:

119 - Mike Scott (S) decisioned Blake Truman 10-0.

125 - Jake Scott (S) pinned Jason Roland.

130 - Johnny Toledo (S) decisioned Jacob Trantham 9-2.

135 - John Clark (S) decisioned Justin Bacon 8-6.

140 - Jonathan Woody (P) pinned Josh Harper.

145 - Brendan Ferguson (S) decisioned Butch Bridges 3-1.

152 - James Walawender (S) decisioned Byron West 12-8.

160 - Tom Browning (P) won by forfeit.

171 - Brandon Woodard (S) pinned Dale Williams.

189 - Brad Shipman (P) pinned Richard Sitton.

215 - Jody Smith (P) pinned Zahay Bone.

Heavyweight - Seth Hicks (P) won by forfeit.

103 - Nick Woodard (S) pinned John Chapman.

112 - David Bryson (P) pinned Mike Cox.

The Mustangs were scheduled to host a tournament Saturday, but it has been postponed until Nov. 30.
