Smoky Mountain will have three wrestlers competing in the State 3-A Meet set for Friday and Saturday in Charlotte.
Cory McElprang will represent the Mustangs at 112 pounds with Mike Scott competing at 119 and Jake Scott at 125. "I would consider those three weight classes the toughest in the region," Coach Todd Odom said. "They all had a returning state champion. To be able to qualify says a lot about their character." The Mustangs finished 12th among 23 teams. |

Odom did not have brackets from the regionals.
McElprang went 4-1 and won the consolation finals with a 10-3 victory over Andrew Roberts of Enka. He avenged a loss to Roberts in the conference tournament. Mike Scott also dominated in the consolation finals, Odom said. Jake Scott qualified for the state meet by rallying in the consolation semifinals. He trailed his opponent from East Lincoln 3-0 but got an escape and a takedown. He won 4-3 in OT when his opponent was called for stalling. Odom said the East Lincoln coach protested resulting in a delay of 30-45 minutes before Scott was officially declared the winner. Brandon Woodard, a state qualifier from last year, won his first two matches before being injured in the semifinals. He finished that match but had to default the rest of the day due to a concussion. "I was disappointed he was unable to compete," the coach said. Odom took five freshmen to the recent Junior High State Championships at Gardner-Webb. They competed in their weight class against other freshmen. "We were expecting to do well, but it was a genuine surprise to have two kids win," he said. Jonathan Toledo was the winner at 121 pounds, and Brendan Ferguson took the championship at 132. Nick Woodard placed fourth at 95. "Their work ethic all year put them in a position to win," Odom said. "This shows how bright the future is going to be at Smoky Mountain." |
