Three Smoky Mountain wrestlers qualified for the State 3-A Tournament during the Western Regionals held Friday and Saturday at Tuscola.
Cory McElprang, Brandon Woodard and Andy Matheson will be making the trip to Charlotte's Independence Arena for the tournament Friday and Saturday. McElprang was second at 112 pounds. Woodard and Matheson came in third at the 130- and 135-pound weight classes, respectively. "They did real well," Coach Ian Roper said. "When you go to state, you're wrestling against people from other regions and anything can happen." McElprang received a bye as the second seed. He advanced with an 18-3 technical fall over Enka's |

Andrew Roberts and a 14-6 decision over South Point's Jason Goble. He was pinned by Tuscola's Derek Mull in the finals.
Roper noted there were no upsets at 112 pounds with the higher seed winning each match. Woodard opened with a pin of Tuscola's Gavin Brown before being pinned by Zach Camp's East Rutherford. In the consolation bracket, he pinned North Surry's Kenneth Flinchum and Kings Mountain's Matt Bridges to qualify for the state tourney. He dropped a 14-8 decision to David Gregory of Ashe in the consolation finals. Roper said the key match came against Bridges, the defending regional champion who had been upset in the championship bracket. Needing a win to qualify for state, Woodard came through with a pin in the first period. Matheson began with an 18-3 technical fall over Asheville's John Hicks before losing an 8-3 decision to Daniel Johnson of Wilkes Central. He advanced by injury default over Franklin's Daniel Sevigny and qualified for the state tourney by decisioning Jonathan Marsee of West Henderson 16-7. In a rematch with Johnson in the consolation finals, Matheson was edged out 9-8. Nathan Novgrod and Chris Hilton both came within one match of qualifying for state. Roper said Novgrod sustained a knee injury in his second match but continued to wrestle. He lost his second consolation match 5-3 when a win would have qualified him for state. Had he won, the plan was to forfeit the consolation finals. "If he had been healthy, I have no doubt he would have won that match," Roper said. The coach said Hilton had a tough draw. He lost a 6-4 decision in the consolation match that could have sent him to the state tournament. "If he had been on the opposite side of the bracket, he would have qualified," Roper said. Other Mustang participating in the regionals were Charlie Graning (103), Jake Scott (119), Boomer Rish (125), Justin Story (152), Chris McFalls (171) and Matt Boud (215). |
