Smoky Mountain's wrestlers finished 12th among 32 teams in the Falcon Invitational held Friday and Saturday at West Henderson.
Coach Ian Roper said "Mat News" ranks the tourney the second toughest in the state. "We came out and wrestled real well," he said. "The tournament had a bunch of state champions in a lot of weight classes." The Mustangs took just nine varsity wrestlers. "I was super pleased with our performance considering what we had," Roper said. Orange, the defending state 4-A champions, won the tournament. Pisgah placed second. SM's top finishers were Chris Hilton, who was fifth at 189 pounds, and Matt Boud, who was sixth at 215. Roper said they both had strong tournaments. Hilton opened with a bye then pinned Daley of Gibbs (Tenn.). He was sent to the consolation bracket when he was pinned by Godlesky of Erwin. Hilton bounced back by pinning Filer of Eastside (S.C.) and Walls of Farragut (Tenn.). He lost a 3-0 decision to Tolbert of Roberson before clinching fifth place by pinning Mikeal of Ashe. Boud started the tournament by pinning Carson of Shelby and Springer of Knoxville Catholic (Tenn.). Watkins of Farragut pinned Boud sending him to the consolation round. He decisioned Bowen of Roberson 5-3 and pinned Brown of Eastside. His last two matches were losses as he was pinned by Israel of Asheville and dropped a 5-2 decision to Wolaski of Irmo (S.C.). Roper said he was also pleased with the performances of Jake Scott at 119 pounds and Brandon Woodard at 135. |
