SM women end year with loss to Franklin |

Smoky Mountain's women's basketball team saw its season come to an end Saturday with a 56-41 loss to Franklin in the play-in game of the Mountain Athletic Conference Basketball Tournament at Franklin.
The Lady Mustangs ended the year 2-24 for the worst record in school history. Bekah Randall scored 16 points for the Lady Panthers. SM was led by Ashley Holmes with nine points. "Franklin played well all night," Coach Cindi Simmons said. "Even though they were ahead by 19 points in the second half, we continued to hustle and came within 11 late in the game." Ashley Harn gave the Lady Mustangs a 6-3 edge with 4:47 left in the first quarter. Two free throws by Megan Plemmons put the Lady Panthers ahead for good, 7-6, at the 4:03 mark. They went on to score the last 10 points of the quarter for a 13-6 lead. Amber Riddle's basket upped the margin to 17-6 with 6:46 remaining in the half. Danielle Bowers capped a string of seven straight points bringing SM within 20-16 at the 2:07 mark. Randall's three-pointer just before the buzzer sent Franklin to the dressing room with a 25-16 lead. The Lady Panthers scored 12 straight points, including consecutive three-pointers by Randall, for a 37-18 lead with 3:21 to go in the third stanza. The margin was 41-24 entering the fourth quarter. The closest SM came after that was 48-37 after two free throws by Holmes with 58.2 seconds to play. Completing the scoring were Alyson Bartell with eight, Katie Crisp with seven, Harn with four, Jessie Woodard with three, and Bowers, Stasha Nicholson, Christy Pruett, Jennifer Hyatt and Courtney Bryson all with two. |
