Free throws help Enka slip by SM in overtime

Enka held Smoky Mountain scoreless in overtime Friday as the Sugar Jets took a 40-33 victory at the SM gym.

The Lady Mustangs concluded Mountain Athletic Conference play last at 0-16.

Lindsey Wilkins scored 15 points for Enka, and Kellyn Gaddy had 13.

Courtney Bryson led SM with seven points.

"We played with Enka every step of the way," Coach Cindi Simmons said. "We had opportunities to win but just stopped scoring late in the game."

The Lady Mustangs were scoreless the final seven minutes, including three minutes of regulation and all of the extra session.

Alyson Bartell's 18-footer at the 3:01 mark of regulation gave SM a 33-30 lead, but it would be the final points scored by the team all night.

A Wilkins basket tied it 33-33 with 2:06 on the clock, and neither team scored the remainder of regulation.

Gaddy hit two of three free throws with 2:53 left in OT for a 35-33 Sugar Jet lead. All seven of their points in overtime came from the foul line.

Wilkins scored her team's first four points and took an 8-1 lead on two free throws by Gaddy with 3:35 left in the first period.

SM cut the gap to 8-5 at the quarter break.

An 8-1 run, including three by Stasha Nicholson, put the Lady Mustangs on top 15-14 with 2:49 to go in the half.

The score was 18-18 at intermission.

Christy Pruett scored the first three points of the second half giving SM a 21-18 edge at the 5:02 mark.

The teams were deadlocked 26-26 entering the fourth quarter.

Nicholson finished with six points, Pruett and Tori Kelly followed with five apiece, Bartell netted four, Danielle Bowers scored three, Ashley Harn had two and Katie Crisp hit a free throw.

The Lady Mustang JVs finished their season 9-8 with a 55-38 win. They pulled away from a 12-12 first quarter tie to lead 28-24 at halftime and 42-28 through three periods.

Kristine Webb scored 16 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Tasha Grant had 11 points and 12 boards. Ameka Buchanan pulled down 11 rebounds. Leslie Mathis recorded six assists and three steals. Cassie Lossiah also had there steals.

"I was really impressed with how the team played a total game," Coach Karla Phillips said. "We played smart and excelled on both offense and defense. It was a great way to end a great season."
