Lindsey Lewis keys SM women to conference win over Erwin |

Smoky Mountain took control in the third quarter Friday and went on to a 51-41 Western Athletic Conference basketball victory over Erwin in the SM gym.
Lindsey Lewis scored 22 points for the Lady Mustangs as they improved to 2-0 in the WAC. Elexis Smith finished with 14 while going over 1,000 points for her career. Tara Green added 11 points. Erwin was led by Kelly Teague with 14 points and Teryn Gull with 11. SM won the defensive struggle by holding the Lady Warriors to 14 points in the second half. "We turned the defensive intensity up in the second half," Coach Cindi Simmons said. "Erwin figures to be one of the top teams in the conference." The Lady Mustangs used an 11-2 spurt, including seven by Smith, in the third period to move ahead. Her free throw at the 4:26 mark gave SM the lead for good at 30-29. A basket with 1:34 on the clock eclipsed the 1,000-point milestone making it 36-31. The run ended when Lewis scored on an inbounds play putting the Lady Mustangs on top 40-31 with 25 seconds to go in the quarter. SM was up 40-33 entering the fourth period. The lead reached double figures for the first time (47-37) when Smith scored with 3:16 to play. The Lady Warriors scored the game's first seven points, including four by Becky Teague, with a little more than two minutes elapsed. The Lady Mustangs responded with nine unanswered points, including four by Lewis, to go up 9-7 with 4:07 left in the stanza. Erwin went on another streak of nine straight, including five by Gull, for a 16-9 advantage with 39 seconds on the clock. The margin was 16-11 at the quarter break. Five points by Green fueled a 10-0 run, capped by Smith's free throw, for a 21-17 SM lead with 3:57 to play in the half. The Lady Warriors came back to hold a 28-27 edge at intermission after Kelly Teague's basket with 36 seconds on the clock. Lewis hit eight of 12 field goals and six of eight foul shots. Smith made five of nine field goals and four free throws. Green hit five field goals, including a three-pointer. Courtney Bryson scored two points while Kaitlin Ritchie and Nathalie Broom both made a free throw. Melissa Collins had seven rebounds and four assists. SM shot 41.3 percent from the floor. The Lady Mustang JVs are 4-3 after a 51-49 overtime win. Jennifer Hyatt scored 18 points while Katie Crisp had 11 and Tori Kelly netted 10. SM led at quarter breaks by scores of 10-9, 24-15 and 38-27. Erwin fought back for a 44-44 tie at the end of regulation. "The girls showed a lot of intensity and worked for every point they got," Coach Tonya Kenyon said. "We hit our free throws, and that definitely kept us in the game. We had been practicing free throws, and I think it really paid off." |
