Allie Lewis, Katie Loughlin earn all-state swim honors

All-state performances from Allie Lewis and Katie Loughlin highlighted Smoky Mountain's showing at Saturday's State 3-A Swim Meet in Raleigh.

Just a sophomore, Lewis was third in the 100 butterfly in 1:00.32 to set a school record. She was also third in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:59.17.

Loughlin, a senior, placed third in diving with a score of 256.50. Among those she finished ahead of was the regional winner from Asheville.

The top three finishers in each event earn all-state honors.

Last year, Lewis and Loughlin were part of relay teams that were all-state.

SM's Cari Heckert was sixth in the 100 breaststroke and set a school record in 1:13.5.

As a team, the Lady Mustangs were 13th with 63.5 points. They finished behind Concord (74) and ahead of Southwest Guilford (58).

East Chapel Hill won the meet with 264 points to Hickory's 202. Asheville was the top finisher from the Mountain Athletic Conference with 118 points to place seventh.

On the men's side, Caleb Corwin had the top performance for SM. He was fourth in diving with a score of 232.5.

Nick Cox placed sixth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:00.24.

The Mustangs were 19th with 33 points. They were a point behind Mooresville and a point ahead of Harnett Central.

East Chapel Hill made it a clean sweep by taking the men's title with 332 points to 220 for Ragsdale. Asheville was third at 154.

"We were a real presence at this meet," Coach Johanna Lewis said. "Five of the six swimmers who went finished in the top eight in at least one event."
