Lady Devils rally to top Lady Mustangs

Swain rallied for five runs in the fifth and final inning Monday to take a 6-3 non-conference softball victory over Smoky Mountain at Webster.

"We had some good at-bats," Coach Melissa Hill said. "We just couldn't turn them into runs, and that hurt. We left the bases loaded in the fourth. Swain is a good hitting team. They were able to get hits when they needed them."

SM's Amber Stephens was working on a one-hitter with a 3-1 lead entering the fifth. Laurie Sutton singled with one out, moved up on an error and two runs scored on Aaron Gunter's single for a 3-3 tie. After an infield hit by Amber Winchester, Tiffany Crisp singled in two runs. Crisp circled the bases on an error.

The Lady Mustangs (1-7) went ahead 1-0 in the second when Katie Crisp doubled and scored on Kristen Wilson's single.

Stephens led off the third with a base hit and came around on Tori Kelly's triple. Crisp added an RBI single for a 3-0 lead.

Amy Cunningham had an RBI single in the fourth for the first hit off Stephens.

Jennifer Hyatt was two of two for the Lady Mustangs. Stephens, Kelly and Crisp were all two of three.

Crisp started a 4-3 double play to end the Swain fourth.

The Lady Mustang JVs fell to 1-6 with a 15-4 loss. Swain scored five runs in the first and was never threatened.

Ruby Burns and Brittany Elders had RBI singles for SM in the second. Crystal Jones singled in a run in the third. Nicole Stanley's home run concluded the scoring in the fifth.

Brandi Farmer had two hits in three at-bats.
