Lady Hawks defeat SM in league action

North Buncombe defeated Smoky Mountain 7-2 in Mountain Athletic Conference softball action Friday at Webster.

"They controlled things defensively until the seventh inning," Coach Melissa Hill said. "We took advantage of their secondary pitcher and had the bases loaded when the coach re-entered his starting pitcher."

The Lady Mustangs (3-11, 2-7) scored both of their runs in the seventh. Kayla Painter walked and eventually scored on Bonnie Claxton's single. After walks to Amber Stephens and Tori Kelly loaded the bases, a run came in on Jennifer Hyatt's infield out.

The Lady Hawks took charge with five runs in the second. Ali Manns and Melody Edmonds both doubled, and Megan Houston singled. Two errors figured into the scoring.

Base hits by Edmonds, Hannah Webb and Brittany Allen led to a pair of runs in the fourth for a 7-0 margin.

Houston had three hits in four at-bats, and Edmonds was two of three.

SM's Claxton went two of three.

Hill said Stephens pitched well.

The Lady Mustang JVs are 2-9 after a 13-3 win. It was the first game as co-head coaches for Pam Hyatt and Mark Taylor after they replaced Ed Jones.

Hyatt said the team turned in a great defensive effort, which included a pair of double plays. She said Brandi Farmer pitched well.

Amber Ball was two of two at the plate, and Farmer was two of four. Tasha Grant had a two-run triple.

"The girls came out and were ready to play," Hyatt said. "I was very impressed with the win."
