Sugar Jets defeat SM |
|
Perennial softball power Enka downed Smoky Mountain 11-1 in Western Athletic Conference action Friday at Enka.
The contest was called after four and a half innings due to the 10-run rule as the Lady Mustangs (6-5, 2-2) saw their school-record four-game winning streak end. "We faced a really good pitcher, and she kept us off balance," Coach Melissa Hill said. Megan Luther limited the Lady Mustangs to two hits. She struck out 10 and walked two. The Sugar Jets scored twice in the first with both runs coming on sacrifice flies. Aided by two errors, they made it 8-0 by scoring six times in the second. Three runs during a third-inning rain storm clinched the win. SM was hitless until the fourth. That's when Tori Kelly walked, and Amanda Magruder and Katie Crisp singled. Amber Stephens gave up nine hits and four walks. "Amber pitched well," Hill said. "We've just got to be more consistent defensively behind her." The Lady Mustang JVs fell to 2-5 with a 9-1 loss. Enka led just 2-1 before erupting for seven runs in the seventh. Singles by Bonnie Claxton and Lillian Herbers-Kelly were SM's lone hit. Ruby Burns was hit by a pitch to force in SM's only run. "Even though it was 9-1, the girls were really proud and I was really proud," Coach Barry Stevens said. "They held Enka, one of the top teams in the conference, to a 2-1 game going into the last inning. It was really a win in their eyes." He said Danielle Bowers pitched well before tiring in the seventh. |
