SM softball team sets school record for wins |
|
Smoky Mountain set a school record for fast pitch softball victories with a 9-4 win over Asheville on March 28 at Webster.
The sixth win was the most for the program since it went to fast pitch in 1996. "The girls have worked hard to bring this program up to a competitive level," Coach Melissa Hill said. "If we want to take it to the next level, we've got to do even more." The game was not well played from a defensive standpoint as SM committed seven errors and the Lady Cougars had six. "We weren't as focused as we had been the day before against Brevard, but we still won," Hill said. "That shows our program continues to improve." Asheville scored in the top of the first, but the Lady Mustangs answered with two in the bottom of the frame without a hit. Tori Kelly walked, and Amanda Magruder and Katie Crisp were hit by pitches loading the bases. Both runs scored on an error. The Lady Cougars scored an unearned run in the second for a 2-2 tie, but SM took the lead for good with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Jessica Cook and Amber Stephens walked before Kelly was hit by a pitch loading the bases. Magruder had an RBI single, and errors on the play allowed two more runs to score. A home run by Crisp put the Lady Mustangs up 7-2. A pair of unearned runs brought Asheville within 7-4 in the third. A double by Stephens and a pair of errors helped SM make it 8-4 in the bottom of the third. Tara Green's home run to left in the sixth accounted for the final margin. Stephens issued just one walk for the second straight game. The Lady Mustang JVs picked up a 15-12 win when the game was called in the fourth inning due to darkness. Natalie Cantler and Jennifer Hyatt were both two of four with Hyatt hitting a home run. SM led 9-1 after the first inning, but errors helped Asheville get back in the game. "They were hitting the ball, and we were hitting the ball," Hill said. |
