|
Smoky Mountain walked to a 21-8 Mountain Athletic Conference victory over Asheville on April 16 at Webster.
The game was called after four and a half innings due to the 10-run rule. The Lady Mustangs received 14 walks while collecting just five hits. Asheville managed only one hit but was the recipient of 12 walks. "It was a wild first inning for both teams," Coach Melissa Hill said. "Even when things didn't go our way, we kept our composure and had patience at the plate." The Lady Cougars scored five runs in the top of the first as they took advantage of five walks and a hit batsman. SM bounced back with nine runs in the bottom of the first thanks in part to six walks and an error. Katherine Quinn and Amber Stephens both delivered two-run singles, and Shay Shular had an RBI single. The Lady Mustangs picked up seven runs in the second for a 16-5 lead. Shular's leadoff single was the only hit of the frame. Four SM batters walked and another reached on an error. Kristen Wilson capped the rally with a sacrifice fly. Asheville scored three times in the third without a hit. Four walks and two errors left the Lady Mustangs holding a 16-8 lead. Quinn walked and scored on Bonnie Claxton's infield out in the bottom of the third making it 17-8. SM clinched the win with four runs in the fourth. Claxton's RBI single was the lone hit. The Lady Cougars issued four walks and committed an error. SM pitcher Kayla Duvall struggled in the first inning but recovered to blank Asheville in three of the final four frames. She allowed only one hit. "Kayla settled down after a shaky start and pitched well," Hill said. |
