SM booters rout SwainSmoky Mountain's soccer team breezed to a 7-0 non-conference victory at Swain on Oct. 1 with a different player scoring each goal."This game served its purpose," Coach Dolphus Brown said. "It was scheduled as a game we could use as a confidence builder, to look at some JVs and give the reserves some playing time." The Mustangs dominated throughout with 32 shots to two by the Maroon Devils. Caleb Corwin and Sterling Brady made one save each for SM. Swain's Tyler Howie recorded 13 saves, and Nicholas Zimmerman added two. SM scored two early goals on headers. Paul Van Der Ven connected from 8 yards out off a Michael Tennant corner kick 2:40 into the game. Eric McManus scored from 6 yards off Eric Neff's throw-in at the 3:50 mark. Stephen Brown's goal at the 17-minute mark made it 3-0. David White provided the assist with Brown knocking the ball in to the near post. The margin reached 4-0 four minutes later on Jonathan Painter's goal with an assist from Bryan Park. Painter scored from 12 yards to the near post after taking Park's cross pass. With just 10 seconds left in the half, Neff chipped a pass to Eddie Noell, who scored from the 12. Tennant's goal from the 11 off a cross pass from McManus made it 6-0 at the 56:50 mark. Kyle Baer scored the final goal at the 59-minute mark. He collected a pass from Painter at the top of the box, and knocked the ball in from 16 yards out. |
