Tuscola breezes to win over Smoky Mountain |
|
Tuscola scored three goals early in the game and breezed to a 7-1 Mountain Athletic Conference soccer victory over Smoky Mountain last Thursday at Waynesville.
Kelly Nassis had two goals and an assist for the Lady Mountaineers. "Our first half of play was outstanding," SM Coach Karla Phillips said. "We kept a really tough Tuscola team confined. In order to be successful, we're going to have to execute consistent play in both halves." The Lady Mustangs jumped in front 1-0 when Jordan Cheek scored on an indirect kick at the 2:23 mark. Tuscola drew even at the 4:52 mark when Nassis put in a header off of an Allison Williams corner kick. Megan Simmons gave the Lady Mounties a 2-1 edge with a hard ground shot at the 9:22 mark. Just a minute later, Maresa Pratt connected for a 3-1 advantage that held up until halftime. Carolyn Pratt scored the first goal of the second half with an assist from Sara Hemphill at the 46:13 mark. Other Tuscola goals were by Nassis (58:25), Meghann Bryant (61:30) and Emily Simmons with an assist from Nassis (74:30). Tuscola dominated play with 26 shots to SM's four. Brittany Hilton made 12 saves for the Lady Mustangs. Phillips said Hilton did an outstanding job as she filled in for Niki Clapsaddle, who was on an out-of-town trip. In the JV game, Tuscola scored with about 10 minutes to play to win 3-2. Carrilea Potter netted both SM goals. Morgan Bowling and Chelsea Burrell provided assists. Danielle Bowers made 14 saves, including one on a penalty kick. Coach Morgan Patterson said Bridget Brannigan made some good defensive plays. She also singled out Bowers and Potter. "The whole team played good defense," Patterson said. |
