Lady Mustang soccer team shuts out North Buncombe |
|
Smoky Mountain's soccer team took a 3-0 victory on Feb. 28 at North Buncombe.
"North Buncombe was a lot better than what we expected," Coach Chris Griffin said. "It was a big difference from our first game (an 11-0 win over Murphy). The defense and offense played well, and we were close on a lot of our shots." The Lady Mustangs had a 15-4 advantage in shots. SM's Lindsey Lewis had two saves, and Cayce Ward made six for the Lady Hawks. Sarah Kehrberg's goal with nine minutes left in the first half gave the Lady Mustangs a 1-0 edge. "Sarah made a beautiful hard left-footed shot from about 15 yards out," Griffin said. Nine minutes into the second half, Katie O'Neill put SM up 2-0 on a direct kick from 20 yards out. She lofted the ball over the wall and into the upper right corner. Kaitlin Ritchie completed the scoring at the 63-minute mark. Sarah Whatley provided the assist with a cross from the corner, and Ritchie one-touched it in. |
