Collins leads SM to victory in first game |

Melissa Collins scored four goals and had two assists Monday leading Smoky Mountain to an 11-0 romp past Murphy in the first soccer game of the season at Carr Hooper Stadium/Babe Howell Field.
Kaitlin Ritchie added two goals and an assist for the Lady Mustangs. "Most of the game we were getting hard shots into the corners," Coach Chris Griffin said. "They played very well for having only two weeks of practice. We did a lot of give and gos and overlaps and played very aggressive soccer. We need to improve our first touches and keeping our heads up." SM dominated the contest from the start and held a 31-3 advantage in shots. Lindsey Lewis and Brittany Hilton both made one save. Collins opened the scoring some three minutes into the game and scored again a minute later. She assisted on Evie Graning's goal at the seven-minute mark for a 3-0 lead. Ritchie scored at the 19- and 26-minute marks for a 5-0 margin. Collins assisted on the latter goal. The Lady Mustangs led 7-0 at intermission after Sarah Kehrberg scored at the 35-minute mark and Collins connected again three minutes later. Two minutes after intermission, Katie Loughlin scored with an assist from Kehrberg. An own goal that deflected off a Lady Bulldog player made it 9-0 at the 47-minute mark. Collins' final goal came at the 59-minute mark with an assist from Ritchie. Loughlin concluded the scoring at the 74-minute mark with Katie O'Neill providing the assist. The Lady Mustang JVs won 7-0 as Sunny Davies scored three goals and had two assists. Rebecca Coward and Allie Lewis each scored twice while Jenna Lackey contributed two assists. SM led 4-0 at halftime and enjoyed a 16-4 advantage in shots. Nikki Clapsaddle made four saves. "They performed very well as a team and passed the ball real well," Coach Jeff Brannigan said. "I was very proud of the girls." Friday's game at Andrews has been moved to SM. The Lady Mustangs will go to Andrews on May 10. |
