Smoky Mountain's soccer team will open its season at home Monday against Murphy.
The JVs will play at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity around 7 p.m. The Lady Mustangs were 19-3 last season and finished second in the Western Athletic Conference. They reached the second round of the state 3-A playoffs. Due to inclement weather, four of five practices the first week were held inside. "We're looking forward to getting out in some space," Coach Chris Griffin said. "We've got a lot to do with so little time." He said Tuscola is the favorite to defend its league title. Brevard and Franklin figure to be tough with Enka expected to be improved. "We have a good group of seniors who have made an impact already in how practice is going," Griffin said. "Several sophomores are looking to contribute. We lost five starters so we have some big holes to fill. We have the potential to be very competitive if team chemistry falls into place." Heading the returnees are seniors Lindsey Lewis at goal keeper and Katie O'Neill at sweeper. They were both named all-conference last season. The remainder of the tentative starting lineup listed by Griffin is as follows: Forwards, senior Kaitlin Ritchie and sophomore Sarah Whatley; midfielders, seniors Jenna Bates, Melissa Collins and Evie Graning and juniors Sarah Kehrberg and Keely Moll; left fullback, freshman Greta Bates; and right fullback, sophomore Anna Dill. The roster also includes juniors Katie Loughlin, Christina Huntsman and Kai Oliver and sophomores Lindsey Bumgarner, Brittany Hilton and Rachel Newbold. The soccer schedule is as follows with * indicating a JV game will be played before the varsity:
