Smoky Mountain routs Swain for second time |

Smoky Mountain pounded Swain for the second time this season with a 69-36 win Friday at Bryson City.
Sam Neff scored 16 points for the Mustangs (4-1) while Jonas Glaser had 14 and Justin Roper added 10. Tyler Howie scored 10 points for the Maroon Devils. "I was proud of Jonas and Sam," Coach Scott Hartbarger said. "They came off the bench and gave us 30 points. We played better the second half." SM led all the way as the game was nearly five minutes old before Swain hit a field goal. Neff scored seven straight points for a 12-4 lead with 18 seconds to go in the first period, which ended with the Mustangs up 12-6. Glaser took over the game with nine consecutive points midway through the second stanza. He hit a pair of three-pointers and a three-point play for a 25-10 advantage with 3:39 on the clock. SM led 36-19 at intermission. A three-pointer by Glaser 10 seconds into the second half pushed the lead to 20. The Mustangs led 51-30 entering the fourth quarter. The game became a total rout as SM scored the final 13 points. Cody Long led the surge with seven. Three of the four field goals by Neff and Glaser were treys. They hit five and three free throws, respectively. Roper made three field goals and four foul shots. Kyle Clayton netted eight points, Long finished with seven, Michael Ritchie followed with five, Silas Webb added four, Allen Sutton and Jake Day had two apiece and Brent Robinson hit a free throw. Clayton pulled down seven rebounds, and Ritchie handed out four assists. The Mustang JVs remained undefeated in five games with a 51-38 victory. They led 26-13 at halftime. Jeff Davis scored 20 points, and Jared Day had 14. "It was a total team effort," Coach Jimmy Roper said. "We hit the open man a lot." He said Day played the JVs best floor game in two years while singling out Michael Ayers for his defense and rebounding. |
