Justin Roper scored 17 points, and Smoky Mountain had 11 players score Nov. 29 in a 72-39 rout of Swain at the SM gym.

Matthew Holling had 14 points for the Maroon Devils.

"Our defensive effort was very good," said Coach Scott Hartbarger, who saw his team improve to 2-1. "Offensively, we're still turning the ball over too much. I was pleased with our effort. It was a total team effort. We had 11 kids score, and everybody played."

Michael Ritchie came up with eight steals. Kyle Clayton pulled down seven rebounds. Hartbarger said all three performed well.

SM's Jason Bennett opened the scoring with a dunk, and Ritchie's follow shot at the 6:04 mark gave his team the lead for good, 4-2.

Sam Neff scored the last five points of the quarter putting the Mustangs on top 13-4. Five points by Roper and a Ritchie free throw opened the margin to 19-6 with 4:53 on the clock. The biggest lead of the half was 32-15 when Clayton made two free throws with 55.8 seconds remaining.

The Mustangs led 34-19 at intermission.

SM continued to pull away and went up 41-20 on a Roper three-pointer with 4:52 to go in the third stanza. Neff scored the final basket of the quarter, and the Mustangs led 52-27.

Landon Farley's four-point play with 1:57 on the clock capped a 13-1 run for the game's biggest lead of 67-31.

Roper hit six field goals, including a trio of three-pointers, and two foul shots. Completing the scoring were Neff with nine, Clayton with eight, Bennett, Farley and Luke Bell with six apiece, Ritchie, Sutton and Jonas Glaser all with five, Lance Gabbard with three and Brent Robinson with two.

The Mustang JVs improved to 3-1 with a 48-39 win. Jeff Davis scored 18 points, and Ollin Dunford had 13.

"We put a lot of pressure on them, and they didn't handle the pressure real well," Coach Jimmy Roper said.

He cited Brody Crawford for his board work with 12 rebounds, Jared Day for his floor game and Michael Ayers for his defense.
