Crystal Moore places fifth at Haywood meet

Smoky Mountain's Crystal Moore was a medalist as she placed fifth at the Haywood County Open, a cross country meet held last Thursday at Junaluska Elementary School.

Her time was 22:41, and she was followed closely by teammate Anna Dill, who was sixth in 22:52. Rebecca Coward was 12th in 23:39, and Julie Fox placed 41st in 28:09.

The Lady Mustangs had just four runners so they did not qualify for team standings. Mitchell came out on top with 67 points to 81 for Mountain Heritage. Jessie Ouzts of Mitchell was the individual winner in 20:27.

Landon Farley led the Mustang men as he was 19th in 20:05 for his best showing of the year, according to Coach Lawson Hopper. Completing SM's top five were:

Robin Sharrett, 20th, 20:07; Casey Jennings, 28th, 21:08; Nitin Patel, 47th, 25:22; and Josh Harper, 48th, 25:33.

The Mustangs were seventh as a team. Franklin won the meet with 46 points followed by Pisgah (56), Madison (88), Rosman (131), Tuscola (154), Mountain Heritage (157), SM (162) and Robbinsville (222).

Rosman's Matt Owen was the individual winner in 16:59.

"Everyone was running really well," Hopper said. "Some of the kids were excited about their times. I just hate we didn't have another female runner. We could have placed high with one more."

He hopes to have enough runners for a women's team by the conference meet.
