Smoky Mountain's cross country teams will open their seasons Wednesday, Aug. 22, at Swain.
Whether there will be enough runners to field men's and women's teams remains up in the air. If not, runners will compete for individual honors only.
So far, five women and three men have come out. At least five runners are needed to field women's and men's teams. "Things are going well," Coach Lawson Hopper said of the runners who have come out. "The kids are working hard. I seem to see more improvement over last year." Back from last year's women's squad are senior Crystal Moore and juniors Anna Dill, Sharon Dills and Julie Fox. They are joined by freshman Brianna Douthitt. On the men's side are seniors Landon Farley and Casey Jennngs and sophomore Michael Cox. They all ran last season. "I'm looking to get two or three more out," Hopper said. "I would feel real good if we had enough guys come out to give us a team. We have enough girls but would be short if someone got sick or injured." The schedule is as follows: Aug. 22 - at Swain; 30 - at Erwin. Sept. 6 - at North Buncombe; 13 - at North Henderson; 20 - at Franklin. Oct. 4 - at Pisgah; 11 - at Enka; 18 -Mountain Athletic Conference Meet at Franklin. |
