Light-hitting Mustangs pick up win over Swain |
|
Smoky Mountain's baseball team managed just three hits Monday but still pulled out a 4-3 non-conference victory over Swain at the SM field.
"I was glad we were able to manufacture some runs early in the game and do some things to move our kids around the bases," Coach Tim Hawkins said. "We played good defense again and didn't commit an error. Anytime you win a game with three hits, you've got to be pleased with the other phases of the game." Patrick Brady (3-0) pitched five innings. He gave up four hits and two walks while striking out eight. Landon Farley pitched two hitless for his second save. Dustin Melton was two of three at the plate. The only other hit for SM (5-4) was a bunt single by Nathan Woods. Two errors helped the Mustangs take a 2-0 lead in the first without a hit. One of the runs came on a double steal with Jake Day scoring from third. SM made it 3-0 in the third. Melton singled, stole second and scored on a squeeze bunt by Woods, who reached first for an infield hit. A Swain error allowed a run to score in the third for a 4-0 lead. The Maroon Devils cut the gap to 4-2 in the fourth. Josh Waldroup singled and scored on Michael Watson's single. Will Holland's infield out drove in a run. Matt Holling's RBI single made it 4-3 in the fifth, but Brady escaped the inning with the lead. Waldroup was the losing pitcher. The Mustang JVs fell to 2-5-1 by losing a doubleheader to Swain at home Saturday. They jumped to a 4-0 lead in game one but failed to hold on. Game two saw SM battle back from an early deficit and almost pull it out. David White and Joseph Stapleton were two of two. Jarrod Frizzell was two of three. White and Frizzell both doubled. "We are not executing in key situations," Coach Bill Rice said. "We showed a lot of fight in the second game and were in it until the last at-bat." |
