Mustangs defeat Polk; fall to West Henderson

Smoky Mountain defeated Polk but lost to West Henderson in non-conference baseball action Monday at West.

The Mustangs (11-6) outlasted Polk 10-7. Jake Lunnen and Dustin Melton were both three of five at the plate. Trent Dillard went two of four, and Justin Hawk was two of five.

"It was a real good baseball game," Coach Tim Hawkins said. "Polk County has an excellent team. They swung the bats real well. We played solid defense and got some key hits."

Eric Mack's two-run double put the Wolverines on top 2-0 in the bottom of the first.

The Mustangs scored on an error in the second, and Lunnen's RBI double tied it in the third.

Josh Hudson singled in the Polk third and eventually - scored on a wild pitch putting his team up 3-2.

SM took the lead for good at 6-3 by scoring four times in the fifth. Lunnen had an RBI single, and Dillard drilled a home run with two men on base.

Allen McEntyre doubled in two runs cutting the gap to 6-5 in the bottom of the fifth.

Both teams scored twice in the sixth leaving the margin 8-7. Lunnen had an RBI double, and Dillard singled in a run for the Mustangs. The Wolverines countered with RBI singles from Jordan Edwards and Jason Fisher.

Melton's RBI double and a run-scoring single by Hawk gave the Mustangs a pair of insurance runs in the seventh.

Hawk (2-2) pitched into the fifth inning for the win. Mack was the loser.

Hudson and Edwards were two of three to pace Polk's offense.

West Henderson, tied for 10th in the latest state 3-A poll, recorded a 3-1 win in Monday's second game. Despite being limited to two hits, SM led 1-0 entering the bottom of the sixth.

"It was a good high school baseball game," Hawkins said. "The intensity level was like a playoff game between two really good teams."

The Mustangs went up 1-0 in the first when Lunnen walked and Dillard was hit by a pitch. The run scored on an error.

In the Falcon sixth, John Dunn singled and scored on Billy McCarson's single. After a single by T.J. Pressley, an error allowed the lead run to score. Brian Williams followed with an RBI single.

Mitchell Pridmore was the winning pitcher in relief.

Jake Lunnen (4-4) took the loss. He allowed five hits and no walks while striking out six. Williams had two hits in three at-bats.

Friday's Western Athletic Conference game at Erwin has been moved to Saturday at 1 p.m.
