Mustangs pull out victory over Swain

Smoky Mountain pulled out a hard-fought 7-6 non-conference baseball victory Monday at Swain. "I was proud of our kids for winning," Coach Tim Hawkins said. "We made two errors, but our defense overall was good. Our pitching was solid overall. We had some trouble at the plate and didn't have good swings at times. We left eight people on base."

The Mustangs (4-0) broke a 4-4 tie with two runs in the sixth. Brody Crawford singled, and Patrick Brady reached when he bunted and the throw to second was not in time to catch Crawford. Tony Belcher laid down a bunt single to load the bases. The lead run scored on Jake Day's infield out. After a walk to Brody Frizzell loaded the bases, Sam Hammer walked to force in a run for a 6-4 lead.

Crawford's homer made it 7-4 in the seventh.

Jeremy Cochran's two-run single cut the gap to 7-6 in the bottom of the seventh, but SM held on for the win with Jared Day recording the save.

Chris Cooper's RBI double put the Maroon Devils up 1-0 in the second.

Hammer belted a three-run homer helping the Mustangs take a 4-1 advantage in the third. The other run in the inning came when Jake Day singled, stole two bases and came home on an error. Two errors helped Swain score twice in the bottom of the third trimming the deficit to 4-3.

The Devils drew even in the fifth as Josh Waldrop walked and eventually scored on a passed ball. Jake Day was three of three at the plate, and Crawford was two of two. Cochran paced Swain with a three for three day.

Brady (2-0) pitched one inning of scoreless relief for the win.

Will Holland went the distance for Swain and took the loss.

The JVs played Saturday at Swain with the Devils leading 10-3 in the top of the fifth when the game was suspended due to rain.
