Asheville holds off late Mustang rally

Asheville held off Smoky Mountain's rally to take a 6-4 Mountain Athletic Conference baseball victory on April 30 at Asheville.

The Mustangs made a game of it by scoring three times in the final inning.

"We fought back in the seventh, but it was just too little, too late," Coach Ron Yount said.

The Cougars scored all their runs in the third against SM starter Patrick Brady (0-3). The key hits were a two-run single by Scott Russell and Brian Welborn's two-run double.

The Mustangs scored on an error in the fourth after a single by Brody Frizzell and Robin Sharrett's double.

SM made things interesting in the seventh. David White walked, Frizzell singled and a run scored on a wild pitch. Chris Turk and Jarrod Frizzell both had RBI singles, but the game ended with the tying run at the plate.

Travis Stephens relieved Brady on the mound in the third and blanked Asheville the rest of the way.

"Travis did an excellent job," Yount said. "That was his first time pitching on the varsity level."

Russell, who was the winning pitcher, had two hits along with Welborn and Owen McClellan.

Brody Frizzell and Jarrod Frizzell both had two hits for the Mustangs.

The JV game was rained out and has not been rescheduled.
