Smoky Mountain opened the Western Athletic Conference portion of its baseball schedule by pounding Pisgah 11-1 Friday at the SM field.
The game was called after four and a half innings due to the 10-run rule. Justin Hawk (1-1) pitched three scoreless innings for the win and was two of three at the plate. "We did what we had to do," Coach Tim Hawkins said. "Hawk threw real good and got off to a good start on the mound. Their pitchers had trouble finding the plate, and we didn't go up there chasing." The Mustangs scored a run in the first as Dustin Melton walked, Hawk singled and Trent Dillard delivered a sacrifice fly. They broke the game open with a five-run second for a 6-0 lead knocking losing pitcher T.J. Turner from the mound. Joseph Ensley walked, advanced on a single and scored on a base hit by Justin Ray. Melton and Jake Lunnen both had RBI singles, and Dillard walked to load the bases. Walks to Josh Carnes and Matt Hopkins forced in runs. |

Singles by Andy Matheson and Josh Day produced the Mustangs' final run in the fourth. After Landon Farley pitched a scoreless fourth, Matheson gave up an unearned run in the fifth. An error put the leadoff man on, and Shawn King's fly ball was misplayed for a triple. In Hawk's three innings, he gave up two hits, walked one and struck out six. The Mustang JVs traveled to Pisgah and scored four runs in the eighth inning to take a 13-9 win. Robin Sharrett doubled in the eighth while Jared Frizzell and Brody Frizzell both singled. Sharrett was two of two at the plate. Jared Frizzell was three of four with two RBIs, and Ben Robinson was two of five with three RBIs. Jared Frizzell came on in relief. He pitched five inning and gave up two hits while striking out 11. "We played real well," Coach Bill Rice said. "We started slow but then came on." Games scheduled with Roberson for Monday were rained out. No make up date has been set. |
