Brotherton, Whitmire take top honors in race Saturday

Travis Brotherton and Barbara Whitmire took top honors in the second annual Greening up the Mountains 5K held Saturday.

Brotherton, a Smoky Mountain High freshman and cross country and track standout, was the fastest finisher of the day with a time of 18:36.

Whitmire was the overall winner for women in 24:26.

Drew Godfrey was second for the men at 18:50 followed by Danny Barns at 21:21.

Placing second and third for the women were Jenny Smith (24:34) and Ashlyn Bristle (24:58).

The race began at the fountain below the old courthouse, followed Savannah Drive to U.S. 23 Business toward Dillsboro, then Dillsboro Road back into Sylva and finished near the starting point.
