Mustangs to resume league action FridaySmoky Mountain's basketball teams will resume Mountain Athletic Conference action Friday at Erwin. The Mustangs are second in the MAC at 3-1 while Erwin is tied for fifth at 2-2. The Lady Mustangs (0-4) will be looking for their first league win against Erwin (1-3). Non-conference home games are set for Saturday against Swain. Franklin will come to SM for MAC games Tuesday. The Panthers and Lady Panthers are 3-3 in the league. The SM men are 7-1 overall after winning the Mustang Christmas Tournament. They defeated Madison 88-67 in Friday's semifinals and rallied for a 67-57 overtime victory over Brevard in the championship game Saturday. Jeff Davis was named most valuable player. He was joined on the all-tournament team by Ollin Dunford. The Lady Mustangs (3-5) had lost 16 straight games going into the tournament but turned their fortunes around by claiming the title. SM knocked off Madison 63-55 in Friday's semifinals and held off Rabun County (Ga.) 43-38 in Saturday's championship game. Stasha Nicholson was chosen MVP, and Danielle Bowers was named all-tournament. Details on the tournament games will be in next week's Herald.
