Key conference games are planned for Erwin Tuesday |

First place in the Western Athletic Conference women's basketball standings will be on the line Tuesday when Smoky Mountain travels to Erwin.
Both teams are 5-1 in the WAC at the midway point. The men's game will also be critical for playoff positioning. SM, Erwin and Enka are 2-4 and tied for the third and final playoff spot from the conference. The Mustangs and Lady Mustangs will go to Pisgah on Friday. The Bears and Sugar Bears are both 4-2 in the league. Blue Ridge will celebrate homecoming Friday against Nantahala and return to Smoky Mountain East Conference play at home Tuesday against Rosman. The Lady Bobcats are 1-4 in the conference while the men are 0-5. Both Rosman teams are 4-1. The Mustang men (8-7) picked up a big win Tuesday, 73-71 at Enka. Justin Roper hit two free throws with five seconds left. Jason Bennett scored 26 points. Jeff Davis and Michael Ritchie both had 14. The SM women fell to 11-4 despite 28 points from Elexis Smith. Lindsey Lewis added 14 points, and Nathalie Broom had 10. The Lady Bobcats (6-15) snapped a nine-game losing streak by downing Highlands 52-35. Jennifer Sherrill scored 18 points, and Ashley Fowler had 11. The Bobcat men are 1-20 following a 56-52 loss. Jeremy Stewart poured in 35 points.
