Little League All-Stars to open tourneys this week

Little League All-Star tournaments open this week for teams in four divisions.

All District 5 West Area tourneys are double-elimination. Teams victorious in the finals of the winners' and losers' brackets will advance to the area finals to face two teams from District 5 East.

Sylva's Fairview Youth Complex will be the site for the 9-10-year-old West Area Tournament. Jackson County's first game will be at 8 p.m. Friday, July 6, against the Cherokee-Mountain winner. If Jackson County wins, it would play at 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, in the winners' bracket finals.

A loss in its first game would mean a 6 p.m. contest Monday, July 9. Subsequent games would be at 8 p.m. July 10 and 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, for the losers' bracket finals.

District finals will be July 14-17 at Ray Kisiah Park in South Asheville.

The Jackson County 11-12-year-old team will open West Area play at 8 p.m. today (Thursday) against Swain at Swain County Recreation Park in Bryson City. The winner will play at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 7 with the winner of that game reaching the winners' bracket finals at 6 p.m. July 10.

A loss in the first game would send Jackson County to a 7 p.m. contest Saturday. Subsequent games would be at 6 p.m. July 9, 8 p.m. July 10 and 7 p.m. July 11 in the losers' bracket finals. If Jackson County loses in the second round, the next game would be at 8 p.m. July 9 leading to the 8 p.m. July 10 game.

District finals will be July 14-18 at Bryson City.

Jackson County will receive a bye in the 13-14-year-old tournament and face Mountain or Andrews at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Mountaineer Junior League Field in Waynesville. The winner will play in the winners' bracket finals at 6 p.m. July 10.

An opening loss by Jackson County would send it to an 8:30 p.m. game July 9. Other games leading to the losers' bracket finals would be at 8:30 p.m. July 10 and 7 p.m. July 11.

District finals are set for July 14-18 at East Asheville's Bullman Field.

Only three teams are entered in the West Area of the 15-16-year-old division. Jackson County will play Mountain at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Macon Middle School in Franklin. The winner will meet Franklin at 6 p.m. July 9 in the winners' bracket finals.

Just one other game, the losers' bracket finals, is scheduled. It will be at 7 p.m. July 10. District finals will be July 14-18 at Franklin.
