SM soccer team gains revenge for earlier loss to Black Hawks

Smoky Mountain's soccer team avenged an earlier loss with a 5-0 Mountain Athletic Conference victory over North Buncombe Monday at Carr Hooper Stadium/Babe Howell Field.

The Mustangs (8-5-1, 4-5-1) jumped to a 4-0 lead at intermission and were never threatened after scoring twice in the final 90 seconds of the first half.

"It's all about our mental attitude," Coach Dolphus Brown said. "We discussed before the game and at halftime playing 80 minutes as hard as we could play. This bunch is starting to understand how important that is."

Silas Webb opened the scoring at the 19:50 mark. The ball was played into the box after a throw-in, and Michael Tennant passed it to Webb, who knocked it in from 5 yards out to the right of the keeper.

Munene Mwaniki made it 2-0 at the 22:10 mark with a double assist from Tennant and Damon Houghton. Tennant played the ball out of the middle and passed to the left to Houghton, who was inside the box. Houghton crossed the ball back to the right to Mwaniki, who scored from 7 yards out.

The lead reached 3-0 at the 38:30 mark as Stephen Brown scored off of Cory Carpenter's assist. Brown took Carpenter's pass, chested it to his feet and kicked it in.

"It was one of the prettiest goals we've seen," the coach said.

The halftime score was 4-0 on Carpenter's penalty kick 30 seconds before intermission. The call came after a hand ball in the box following a throw-in.

Tennant concluded the scoring 10 minutes into the second half with Houghton and Eric Neff providing assists. Houghton played the ball from his defensive position to the middle of the box. Neff flicked it to the left to Tennant, who scored from 10 yards out.

"Our goal was to not be outhustled for one second," Coach Brown said. "I was pleased that we played hard to the very end."

SM took 19 shots to six for the Black Hawks. North's Casey Irvine made six saves. Will Peoples had one for the Mustangs. Caleb Corwin played goalie the last 20 minutes for SM and had five saves.

It was just the third shutout of the season but the second in back-to-back games. "We're excited about the progress we're making," the coach said.

The Mustang JVs are 2-7 after a 2-1 victory. Jonathan Toledo and Eddie Noell scored the goals. Bryan Mand had an assist.

"It was good to get a win," Coach Bo Carpenter said. "Both goals were pretty." He said Nicholas Savell and David White played well.
