County buys land to expand school

12.5 acres purchased by county for SMHS Herald photo by Lisa Majors-Duff Jackson County Manager Jay Denton, left, and Smoky Mountain High School Principal Ken Henke survey the 12.5 acres recently bought by the county to expand the high school. The land was purchased for $650,000 from Edward and Freddie Jones, who have the option of remaining on the property for one year.

Just how the land will be used to accommodate Smoky Mountain's growth will not be determined until a feasibility study is completed by Padgett and Freeman architects. In the meantime, county officials are looking into the possibility of harvesting a portion of the white pines in the background.
