Local Relay for Life volunteer Haven Stephens of Cullowhee lights one of the hundreds of luminaires that lined Western Carolina University's track Friday night (June 9). Each sand-filled bag contained a candle that was lit in honor of a cancer survivor or in memory of someone who died of the disease. Just before the luminaire service began, Haven's brother, Allen Stephens, sang "Lifesong," which was written to honor those stricken with cancer. With a message of "hope...learning to cope. It's about being a community that takes up the fight. It's about finding a cure for cancer. It's a Relay For Life," the song set the stage for the memorial service and survivor's lap that followed. Jackson County's annual Relay is one of many sponsored across the southeast by the American Cancer Society to raise money for cancer research.
