In an effort to collect funds from Jackson County leaders for the Relay for Life benefit hot dog lunch Friday, Sheriff Jim Cruzan (left, center) did his duty and arrested Commissioners Stacy Buchanan (far left) and Jay Denton (far right) and Clerk of Court Frank Watson (middle picture). Each was given time off for work release and put in charge of grilling dogs (bottom picture). The "inmates" served nearly 250 plates of food, helping organizers collect $1,675 during the event. Proceeds from the fund-raiser will go to the American Cancer Society's annual Relay for Life, a 18-hour event to raise money for cancer research. This year's event will begin Friday, June 9, at 6 p.m. and run through June 10 at noon at the Western Carolina University track. Walkers are still needed, said event Chairman Mary Moody. For more information on how to participate, call Moody at 586-4014. Following the successful event, the criminal records of Buchanan, Denton and Watson were expunged, Cruzan said.
