Local school officials reopen applications for superintendentBy Lynn Hotaling |

Due to the low number of applications received for superintendent, local school officials Monday (Aug. 7) decided to seek additional candidates.
Jackson County school board members interviewed six candidates last Tuesday. Sources indicate three are Jackson County educators, one is from another county in North Carolina, and two are from out-of-state. Superintendent Frank Burrell declined to confirm or deny the information. "We interviewed good applicants," said school board Chairman Martha Queen. "My concern is whether advertisements went far and wide enough." Board member Ali Laird-Large said she had received criticism that the position wasn't advertised in professional journals. That concern was echoed by board member Ray Trine, who said he had also heard that the perception across the state was that there was no need to apply for the position because the outcome was a "done deal." "There was discussion around the state that it was a moot point," Trine said. "I want it known that we're actively seeking a superintendent. "I think we got good applicants - we just didn't get a lot. I'm concerned the word didn't get out." It was decided to re-advertise the position for four weeks, both in newspapers with statewide distribution and on the Internet. Board members decided to follow the same procedure as they did previously and have applications picked up and returned to the law office of school board attorney Paul Holt. Interested candidates have until Friday, Sept. 9, to apply. |
