TWSA to host open house, discuss Cashiers expansion project July 16

By Rose Hooper

Tuckaseigee Water and Sewer Authority will host an open house Tuesday, July 16, from 3 to 5 p.m. at its new location on 1246 W. Main Street, Sylva.

The offices are the former Duke Power/Nantahala Power and Light offices.

The open house will precede the board's 5:30 p.m. meeting. At that meeting the board is scheduled to discuss alternatives for expanding the Cashiers Sewer Plant.

Low bids on the project, which is slated to expand capacity in Cashiers from 100,000 gallons to 200,000 gallons per day, came in over $1 million.

"That is well over what was anticipated," said TWSA Executive Director Jerry King.

Of the five bids received, the apparent low bidder was RPB Systems Inc. of Asheville at $1,024,000. The board was expecting bids around $800,000, King said. TWSA has three months to raise the funds if construction is to proceed.

The expansion is proposed to include a sludge pump station, two circular clarifiers, tertiary filters, chlorination/dechlorination facilities, and a post aeration and control building.
